The Seascape Medallion
This
medallion is a good example of "married metal" casting: a series of castings,
one upon another, wherein each casting is fused, or "married" to the next
casting.
Regarding this piece, first the bail was cast in 18K yellow
gold. Then the dolphins were cast using 22K yellow
gold. The bail and the dolphins were placed in the seascape which
was sculpted in wax. This wax sculpture of the seascape was then
cast using sterling silver, and in so doing, the bail and dolphins became
fused, "married" to the sterling silver seascape. With this accomplished,
the textured frame was sculpted around the seascape and up to the base
of the bail, and then cast in 18K green
gold.
The end result is The Seascape Medallion composed of six individual
sculptures married together; one side of the medallion presenting a bird's-eye
view of golden dolphins swimming over and through a sterling silver seascape,
and the other side presenting a fish's-eye view of those same golden dolphins
swimming through and into a sterling silver seascape.
The
Seascape Medallion won first prize in the 1994 Southern California
State Expo in Del Mar, California. |
